DescriptionThis vase was acquired in Petra by the donor before the war of June 1967, al Naksa and incorporates traditional pottery techniques of the region. The Nabataeans are a distinct civilization and political entity that flourished between the fourth and second centuries BC, settling first in Petra and subsequently expanding their territory throughout the Levant. When Nabatean culture flourished, they became known for their ceramics and pottery. Nabataean wares take many forms, and can be classified by their thickness, rim shape, bases, and decor. Nabateans are known for finely-potted painted ceramics, sculpture and architecture and are most well known for the archaeological sites in Petra, specifically monuments such as al-Khazneh and al-Deir.
