Nina Simone (2021) by Asma Ghanem
Art
For Black History Month, we honor Nina Simone—a transcendent icon of collective liberation, resistance, and justice. During the 1960s, Simone’s stirring songs became anthems of the civil rights movement, challenging racial injustice and inspiring transformative change. Today, her enduring legacy continues to empower musicians and activists worldwide.
This evocative portrait of Nina Simone was created by Asma Ghanem and featured in our exhibition, "Freedom is One: Palestinian-Black Kinship Then, Now and Tomorrow," which ran from fall 2021 to spring 2022. The exhibition examined the solidarity between Palestinian and Black communities, exploring their shared struggles against colonialism and imperialism through a diverse array of art forms and symbols of resistance.
Asma Ghanem is a Syrian-born Palestinian visual artist, photographer, and experimental musician currently based in Ramallah, Palestine, whose work continues to probe the intersections of politics, identity, and creative expression.
