Fleeing the Nakba (1948)
Photograph
Palestinians fleeing their homeland between 1948 and 1950 are abundantly photographed throughout the time period, and difficult to source or credit. During the Nakba, over 750,000 Palestinians fled for temporary safety in the face of horrific violence due to Zionist militias invading their towns and cities, only to become displaced and denied their right of return for decades, and generations, later.
Previous: Taken on June 26, 1948, this photograph depicts a group of Palestinian refugees walking across No Man’s Land during a UN negotiated truce. Trucked from their home village near Haifa by the International Red Cross, they headed towards Tulkarem. Today 828,328 Palestinian refugees are registered in the West Bank and 2,206,736 in Jordan.
